Yamaha introduced its original Enduro, the DT1 250cc model in 1968 and forever changed the off-road motorcycle market in the U.S. By 1970 the Yamaha enduro line-up was booming with six models; JT1 60, HT1 90, AT1 125, CT1 175, DT1 250, and the mighty RT1 360. This was the height of segmentation in the motorcycle industry (as comparative, note the Honda CB/CL/SL lineups from the same era).
The 90cc HT1 B was offered in 1970 and 1971, positioned between the 60cc JT1 minibike and the full-sized 125cc AT1 (and AT1C with electric start). In 1972 the HT1 90 was replaced by the LT-2 100cc Enduro.
During my youth there was nothing more I desired than a JT1 Mini Enduro and I consumed every article, advertisement and brochure I could get my hands on. Finally, I acquired a used JT1, with the highly-sought Bassani pipe, and immediately began wanting the bigger HT1 90 when I wasn’t burning laps in our suburban Detroit neighborhood backyard.
The ‘70 and ‘71 Enduro models were very distinctive with a single-line pin stripe and black badge with chrome Yamaha lettering adorning their perfectly formed gas tanks. Just like the bigger models, the 90 Enduro had a wide ratio 5-speed gearbox, Autolube and exclusive 5-port power.
This particular bike is a brilliant, all original 1971 HT1B 90 with 700 miles, the original dealership sticker and a clean, Colorado-issued title (from 2004). It has passenger pegs, a Yamaha accessory larger rear sprocket and a period correct Bates luggage rack. The bike starts and runs great, the Autolube system is operational and original air cleaner assembly is also still in place.
